Melvin "Gene" Carter

Melvin "Gene" Eugene Carter, 82, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died April 8, 2020 in Gothenburg, NE.

He was born May 29, 1937 in Carter, SD, son of Emery and Vera (Paulson) Carter.  The family moved to Nebraska soon after his birth and he made the state his home.  He graduated from Valentine High with the class of 1955.  Gene married Bonnie Lou Bechtold on May 10, 1959 at Valentine.  They lived there until 1967 when they moved to Franklin where he worked for Triple F Feeds.  They then lived at Gothenburg from 1969-79 where he worked for Brooks & Stebbins and B & K Oil.  They moved to North Platte in 1993 where he worked for the Lincoln County Dept of Roads until 1997. Then they moved to Rapid City, SD where he worked for the SD Dept of Roads until his retirement in 2017.  He loved to move snow!  They then returned to Gothenburg. Gene was a cowboy at heart with a deep love for a good horse and wide open country.  He was involved in the Pony Express ReRide for several years.  He was a member of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Posse for many years and served for a while as president of the Posse.  In his free time he enjoyed leather working and tooling.

Survivors include wife, Bonnie Carter of Gothenburg, NE; two sons, Danial (Joni) Carter of Loomis, NE, Donald (Mitzi) Carter of Elm Creek, NE; daughter, Kathy (David Dittmer) Carter of Greeley, CO; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; along with many friends and extended family members.

Melvin "Gene" was preceded in death by his parents Emery and Vera; and two sisters.

Memorial Services will be held at Cornerstone Bible Church, Saturday, July 18, 2020 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Scott Newman and Pastor James Shank officiating. Please follow social distancing guidelines.

Memorials may be directed to the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department.
