W. A. "Si" Simon

April 6, 1932 — October 3, 2018

Winston Albert "Si" Simon passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in Frisco, CO.
Winston was born on April 6, 1932 in McCook NE to Winston Prentis Simon and Zella Mae (Stoner) Simon.  His mother died when he was two years old and he was raised by his grandparents Albert and Rose Stoner.  He attended school in Moorefield, NE until the eighth grade when the high school closed.  He transferred to high school in North Platte NE where he played for the  basketball team that went to State tournament  three years in a row-his sophomore, junior and senior year.  After graduating from high school he joined the Navy where he served during the Korean Conflict 1949-1951.  When he wasn’t at sea, he was playing basketball on the Navy team up and down the California coast.
After his discharge he attended the University of NE Lincoln, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He was doing post-graduate work in Geology when he met Cathy Gumb and they were married in 1959.  They had two children, Mike and Tawney.  He worked for GMAC until 1969 when he bought the GM dealership in Gothenburg, NE.  He owned and operated Simon Motor for 23 years.  During this time he was active in the American Legion post - serving in a state office-and the Legion Baseball program.  He also served as Dawson County Commissioner for 11 years.
When he sold his business, he and Cathy bought a home in Frisco, CO and he became a mountain driver, mostly for Keystone Ski resort.  This enabled him to pursue his favorite pastime, skiing.  Eventually he retired and became a year-round resident of Gothenburg again.  He was a good husband, a good father, and a good Republican.  In recent years, his coffee buddies have been very important to him.
He was preceeded in death by his grandparents, his parents, and his stepmother, Hilda Leseberg Simon.
He is survived by his wife Cathy, his son, Michael Prentis Simon, his daughter Tawney Lee Simon (Tony Moreno), his granddaughter, Gabriele Tawney Moreno, and his grandson Cal J.T. Moreno.
Memorial Services will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, October 11, 2018 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Jill Boyd officiating.

He will be interred at Ft. McPherson.

Memorials may be given to the Gothenburg Senior Center, 410 20th Street, Gothenburg, NE 69138.
