Verle Nelson

September 27, 1912 — September 18, 2006

Lula Verle Nelson, 93, passed away on September 18, 2006. She was currently living at the Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte. Verle was born on September 27, 1912 at the Barry Ranch north of Maywood, NE, in Lincoln County, to William Edmund and Jessie Jane (Barry) Towne. She attended the Highland School and District 88 School. She was the second oldest of 12 children. Her father bought their first car in 1926, a Motel-T Ford, and drove Verle and her sister Rowena to school everyday in Maywood, making 2 trips a day for 4 years.

Verle worked in a restaurant in Ogallala and kept house for Elsie Schmitz. She helped her mother and father raise the large family of 12 children.

On March 21, 1928 she married Clare Eric Nelson in the North Platte Courthouse. They lived on a farm in Moorefield for many years before retiring to Centennial Park Retirement Village. In 1988 they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They both loved to travel and fish. They would often take her siblings along on the fishing trips to Canada, Colorado and Wyoming. Clare and Verle joined the Berean Fundamental Church together on May 11, 1952 and were also baptized together on May 23, 1952. She was very active in the Berean Fundamental Church at Curtis. Verle was known as a éaA"Prayer Warrioréa?. She taught Sunday School for preschool children for many years, which was her biggest love. She was always there whenever she was needed. She is remembered for being a true Christian and always there to help others in need, and a lady to look up to. She always took the time to involve children, whether it was at her house, cooking, playing dress up, reading stories, everyday chores, or at Sunday School, and teaching the word of God. She would be right in the middle of the children playing with them. She was very instrumental in making sure the kids had a way to Bible School, Awana's or Maranatha Bible Camp. Her and her husband would be seen taking a car full of kids to church events. Verle was also involved in the Faith Circle Group at the church.

Survivors include six brothers: William Towne, Lawrence Towne, Virgil (Edna) Towne, Leland (Lois) Towne éa" all of Curtis, and Harold (June) Towne of Louisiana, Missouri and Max (Jean) Towne of Elkhorn, Iowa. One Sister: Georgianna (Willis) Ervin of Colorado. Many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding her in death was her husband Clare, parents, sister Rowena Burton, Melvin Towne, Floyd Towne and infant brother Leonard.
