Maralyne Gallagher

October 9, 1937 — September 13, 2020

Maralyne Kay Gallagher passed away on Sunday, September 13th, 2020. She was 82 years old.

Maralyne was born on October 9th, 1937 to Ralph and Bernice Shafer in Superior, Nebraska. Her older brothers and sister were Daryl, Norman and Patricia. She grew up among family in Superior and attended the local schools. While still in high school, she met and married Don Nelson. They eloped and kept their marriage a secret for a few weeks. They later brought 4 children into the world, Kevin, Kent, Tony and Sue Anne. Maralyne was a dedicated Christian and raised her family to know the Lord through the local church, wherever they lived. She and Don eventually landed in Cozad, Nebraska where they raised their family. Money was always tight, so in the early days, she often provided baby sitting and took in ironing to raise extra money. Later, she drove to North Platte, NE, attending and eventually graduating from Mid-Plains Community College’s nursing program, earning an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) credential. She spent the rest of her career working in area nursing homes and long-term intensive care units in local hospitals. She was a gifted care giver for the elderly. It was truly her gift and ministry to care for the aged. She and Don later divorced. Maralyne eventually moved to Gothenburg, NE, for work and it was also where she eventually met and married Dr. John Gallagher, a local pharmacist. They enjoyed traveling to Lincoln to attend Husker football games with John’s season tickets. John passed away in 2003. Maralyne finished her career in nursing and retired in Gothenburg. She liked to read, watched her favorite TV shows and was active with the local Baptist church, working in the Stephen ministry (pastoral care).  She visited her friends regularly and talked about life over a good cup of coffee and dessert. Her health deteriorated in the last few years, requiring a move into the Stone Hearth Estates (Assisted Living facility) in Gothenburg. There she enjoyed early breakfasts of pancakes, bacon, hash browns and black coffee. She knew many there from her working days in the local hospital. Our family is deeply grateful for the quality care that she received in the last few years of her life at Stone Hearth. She is now at peace, having received eternal life as promised by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Maralyne is survived by Kevin Nelson of Sheridan, WY, Tony (Disa) Nelson of Bozeman, MT and Sue Anne Collins of North Las Vegas, NV. Along with several nieces, nephews, grand-children and great grandchildren.

Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Superior, NE on Thursday, September 17, 2020.

Memorials may be given to Stone Hearth Estates, 110 20th Street, Gothenburg, NE 69138
