Leo Adolph Werkmeister was born Sept.15, 1921, the oldest of 9 children, in Tilden, Ne. to Adolph and Ella Klug Werkmeister. Leo grew up in Hayes County and attended Valley and Nitch schools thru the 8th grade. At the age of 10 Leo moved in with his uncle Albert and aunt Mildred Werkmeister, to help take care of his grandfather
Leo loved polka and waltz music and learned to play the accordion. His uncles Walt and Albert played accordion for the dances held in Hayes County. It was at one of these dances in Dickens that he met the love of his life, Jean Aylward. They were married on Sept. 22, 1948 in a double ceremony with his brother Elgie and bride, Betty Robertson. Jean and Leo enjoyed travel and camping with a group of friends and had traveled to Alaska with the Good Sams Club. Leo was a 30 year member of the Maywood Lions and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award for humanitarian services. He enjoyed working on the many community service projects they undertook.
He always had a smile and a greeting for everyone he saw. When asked how he was, his reply was always, " kickin' but not very high!"
He never missed morning coffee at the café and loved to drive in the country. He loved his family and friends and visiting with everyone at a "covered dish" (especially the pie).
As well as his many friends and family, his birds and squirrels will miss him.
Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, brothers Max, Earnest, Raymond, Elgie and sister Darlene, brother-in-law Duane Aylward, sisters-in-law Neva Schultz Aylward and Donna Schultz Werkmeister.
He is survived by his son, Louis and wife, Susan, brother Melvin and wife Lucille Large and sisters Arlene Werkmeister and Lois Bennett, brother-in-law Pat Aylward, Sisters-in-law Pat Orman and Roberta Ruppert, Granddaughter Tradi VanDrimmelen and husband John.
