Joni Kay Peterson, 61, of Lexington went on to her heavenly home on August 4, 2021 at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington and is running around talking to all her friends and family. Joni was born in Gothenburg, NE to Kent and Marian (Rodine) Peterson on June 11, 1960. Joni was raised on the family farm in Wild Horse Valley north of Brady, NE.
Joni was born with Cerebral Palsy and had many challenges with her life. She attended grade school at Spannuth north of Brady and Educational Service unit 16 in North Platte and received her GED. She also attended University of Nebraska in Lincoln and of course a diehard GO BIG RED fan and never missed watching a game since she was a teenager.
Over Joni’s earlier life she lived in North Platte with another family and Omaha for 3 years at the Quality living, inc. In 1994 she moved to her own apartment in Kearney and lived there for 22 years which she loved having her own place.
In 2016 due to some health-related issues, she was moved to Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington where she was needing some additional long-term care and resided there for almost 5 years.
Joni was a strong Christian and loved the Lord and never lost her faith in going to heaven and walking and talking with all her fellow Christian friends and family. Joni attended Svea Dal Covenant Church where she grew up and the Evangelical Free Church while in Kearney. She was involved in Campus Life and the Greenhouse in North Platte.
Due to her limitations of not being able to speak clearly, she was very efficient with the type writer to communicate with and later on using Facebook on the Internet to allow her to talk to her friends and family.
No matter how sick she was she always had a loving smile that will never be forgotten. She was loved by everyone that knew her and had a special place in everyone heart.
Joni is the only family member that got to ride in a hot air balloon with her cousin Sheryl on her last big trip to California.
Joni is survived by her parents Kent and Marian Peterson, one sister Tamera (Rocky) Herrick, two brothers Craig (Kathy) Peterson, Brent Peterson, several cousins, nieces and nephew and great nieces and nephews.
