Joan Eloise (Harbert) Wiiest, 69, of Moorefield, Nebraska, went to be with her Heavenly Father on February 28, 2014 at her home in Moorefield, NE.
She was born November 26, 1944 in Curtis, NE to Edgar William and Muriel Elsie (Wells) Harbert. She grew up on a farm four miles south of Moorefield, NE. She attended grade school at District 30 south of the farm. In 1962 she graduated High School from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. She then attended McCook college until 1964 where she obtained a certificate of teaching. While at McCook she met her husband Ronald L. Wiiest. They were united on August 16, 1964 in Moorefield at the Moorefield Church of God. Following their marriage the couple moved to Seward, NE. While teaching school she took summer classes at the University of Nebraska Lincoln to obtain her Bachelors Degree. In 1975 the moved back to the farm in Frontier County where she taught school in Moorefield. When the Moorefield School closed, she began teaching in Curtis at Medicine Valley where she taught until her retirement in 2006. After retirement she remained very active in the school system. Throughout her life she was very active in many activities in the school and church as well. During the summers she spent her spare time in the garden and making sure that her kids and adopted kids were shuffled to baseball games, practices, 4-H activities and many other places. Joan was the type of person that made sure that no kid went without whether it was a pencil and eraser or a meal and a place to stay "mom was always the person to go to."
She is survived by her husband of 49 years Ronald Wiiest of Moorefield; Sons William (Tim) and wife Theresa of Broken Bow, Michael and wife Tina of Levelland, TX; Charles and wife Kelsey of Nebraska City, Kenneth and wife Becky of Elwood, Stephen and wife Teresa of Bassett, Matthew and wife Kelli of Curtis; daughter Loraine and husband Clarence Brown of Curtis, adopted daughter Michelle of Moorefield,15 grandkids, and too many other adopted kids to mention; sister Janet Laizure and husband Dale of Stamford, NE.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Edgar and Muriel Harbert.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Curtis, Nebraska; Wednesday, March 5, 2014 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm with the family present from 4:00-6:00 pm.
Services will be held at Medicine Valley High School, March 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Derrick Brown and Pastor Paul Warneke officiating.
Burial will follow in the Moorefield Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Medicine Valley High School Foundation for a scholarship or to the family.
