Jewel May (Roe) Schulz of Gothenburg, Nebraska died February 9, 2023, at the age of 91.
Jewel was born to Ed and Irene Roe in Cozad, NE on October 16, 1931. She attended school in Cozad and attended the Church of Christ. On February 24, 1949 she married Milton Schulz at the parsonage of the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg, NE where she was baptized and confirmed. They honeymooned in Colorado and in pioneering fashion, decided to settle near Littleton, CO where they lived and worked on a ranch for two years. Upon returning to Nebraska, they lived north of Willow Island, and that is where all four of their children were born: Sharon, Laurel, Janice, and Kenneth. The three girls attended the Middle II Willow Island country school. In 1962, the family moved to Gothenburg.
While her children were young she was a stay at home mom, yet she was always helping to provide for her family by sewing and making dresses for the girls. When the children were older, she worked several different jobs and then decided in 1972 to attend beauty/cosmetology school in North Platte. After graduating, in 1974, she joined her friend Donna Folkers in her beauty shop. In an entrepreneur venture, she opened the ModeO’Day clothing store, in downtown Gothenburg, on October 25, 1979, which she successfully ran for 10 years.
After retiring she became an active member of the quilting group at the Lutheran Church. She enjoyed making keepsake quilts for all her children and grandchildren. Crocheting became her next skill to develop and many of those projects ended up with purple ribbons at the Dawson County Fair and as gifts to her family. The intricate tablecloths and other works of art she created will be treasured. She was a wonderful cook, and her grandchildren will remember many good meals and special dishes and cakes she would prepare for each one. Jewel also enjoyed time reading, doing puzzles and playing cards with friends and family.
She rose to her name in her life. She was a jewel to her beauty clients, clothing customers, family and friends. She was truly a treasure, a jewel on earth - a gem.
Jewel was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Lee Schulz, daughter Janice Rickertsen, sister Ruth Morris, brother LaVern Roe, parents Ed and Irene Roe, brother-in-law Gerald Morris, sister-in-law Marge Roe, son-in-laws Robert Auld and Jeffrey Clark, Grandson Isaac Auld, and Great grandson Robert Isaac Auld.
