Harley Hansen

June 20, 1939 — October 8, 2017

Harley Wayne Hansen, 78 of Moorefield went to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, October 8, 2017. He was born June 20, 1939, the third child of Leslie and Marguerite Hansen, at the family home in Cottonwood Canyon north of Curtis, NE.  Relatives and friends were gathered that afternoon at the Hansen home to play a game of baseball. He always joked how they all came in to see him after the game and remarked that he was the cutest baby they had ever seen.  Harley was raised on the farm, working beside his parents and siblings and learning the value of hard work, honesty, integrity, respect, and love of the land and for his neighbors.  He attended District 76 School through the 8th grade and then the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, NE for four years of high school, graduating in May 1957.

After graduation Harley worked for the Grunden Ranch and then was drafted into the Army, serving from 1962-1965, serving 18 months in Italy.  Upon returning home he met the love of his life, Kathy Cassell, at a dance in Gandy, NE.  They were married at the Stapleton Presbyterian Church on February 19, 1966.  God blessed them with a daughter, Kimberly, and a son, Wesley.  He enjoyed going to his children’s school activities and was very proud of them.  He was on the Moorefield School Board when his children attended school there.  Harley loved to farm and care for his cattle and horses.  If something was broken he could fix it, whether in the house or in his shop, he was very handy often whistling while he worked.  He loved people and enjoyed visiting and having a good time. But his passion was his family, especially his grandchildren.

Harley loved the Lord and was a member of the Berean Bible church, Curtis, NE.  He will be remembered for his love for life, his sense of humor and willingness to help others.  Harley was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie & Marguerite Hansen; his sister, Ella (Hansen) Lenz and brother-in-law, Judd Lenz; mother- and father-in-law Winnie and Frank Cassell; brother-in-law, Bill Cassell; a great-nephew, Landon Dodson; and special friends, Forrest and Blanche Grunden, and Kenny Sanders. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Hansen, children Kim (Rob) Franzen, and Wes Hansen; grandchildren Will and Harley Franzen, brothers Thorval (Artis) Hansen, Marvin (Bee) Hansen, sister Norma Hansen, sister-in-laws Janey Jacobsen and Velda Cassell; his loving companion, Cocoa; and many nieces, nephews and great friends.
